Conclusion

With the function 'Save As PDF', Mac OS X makes it possible to print a web page as a PDF file, instead of for the printer. It is advantageous to use the function to archive the visual parts of a web page, which then appear as a static snapshot of the web page. The method cannot be used to archive dynamic elements. The (static) visual parts of the archive web page appear remarkably correct with this archiving function, and the only disadvantage is that the web page is made up in a printable format (A4, A3, etc.).

Recommended settings

The utility is used by downloading the desired page from the browser, then choosing ’print’ in the ’archive’ menu (command + p). A dialogue box will appear, where 'Save As PDF', and a path to the archived web page are chosen. The utility should be set to include the background in the archived material. This can be done by choosing the setting for the browser in the dialogue box (such as Safari or Internet Explorer), then checking ‘print background’ (different browsers may use different wording)

Back to main outline

The test was carried out by graduate student Bo Hovgaard Thomasen during the period from July- December 2004, and its premises and main results are explicated in the text Test of software and strategies for micro-archiving websites.

Note: We do not have the resources to offer technical support or other advice on the use of the tested archiving programme beyond what can be found on this web page.
