A Mac OS X programme with graphic interface, built on the command-line-based open source programme 'wget' (GNU General public Licence). See test of wget.

Conclusion

DeepVacuum (vers. 1.24) uses the wget 1.9 programme to archive the source codes and other content of web pages, and to convert these elements to a navigable offline version. The programme cannot archive content elements requiring an online connection for viewing. The graphic interface makes using command-line based wget less complicated, but at the same time the interface means reduced flexibility and configuration speed. Furthermore, archiving is relatively slow. The archived websites often appear correct, but the programme does not archive as correctly as, for instance, WebHTTrack and WinHTTrack. DeepVacuum. allows several websites to be archived simultaneously.

Recommended settings

Enter the desired web address (URL) in the URL field, and choose 'Whole Site' from the archiving list. Then the programme's 'Preferences' (the 'apple menu' on the menu bar at the top of the monitor, or the keyboard shortcut 'apple +'), and a destination path are chosen for the archived files. The programme's advanced settings are accessed with the bottom key (arrow-down). Here the number of hyperstructure levels to be followed can be set, using the 'Recurse' tab, and archiving should, depending on the website to be archived, be limited to 4-5 levels. The configuration of an archiving can be saved for later repeat archiving of the same website, using the menu 'File/Save'. If several websites are to be archived simultaneously, this is done by choosing the menu 'File/New' note that a new path must always be set in the programme's 'Preferences'.

Back to main outline

The test was carried out by graduate student Bo Hovgaard Thomasen during the period from July- December 2004, and its premises and main results are explicated in the text Test of software and strategies for micro-archiving websites.

Note: We do not have the resources to offer technical support or other advice on the use of the tested archiving programme beyond what can be found on this web page.
