UPDATE
[2005.08.09]:
Version 1.2.1 is now available from the developers website. The programme in its new version (not tested here) features a completly new interface and command line support. Web2Pic now costs 21 USD.

Conclusion

Web2Pic can make a screenshot of an individual web page. The archived material appears as a static snapshot of the web page and dynamics are thus not archived. The programme is not always able to archive the web page (among others, this was the case when archiving www.dr.dk/skum and tv2.dk in this test), which instead appears severely lacking. It should be noted that the programme archives a great number of web pages correctly. It is also an advantage that Web2Pic is free.

Recommended settings

Web2Pic need not be installed, only unpacked and run from the 'WEB2PIC.exe' file. The programme is easy to use and the options for settings are limited. The URL for the desired web page is typed into the programme’s address field, and the 'WEB2PIC.' button (at the bottom) is pressed. Archiving format and compression are then chosen. JPEG format and 85 % compression are recommended, since this limits the space used on the hard disk, while the quality of the images is acceptable to most users.

Back to main outline

The test was carried out by graduate student Bo Hovgaard Thomasen during the period from July- December 2004, and its premises and main results are explicated in the text Test of software and strategies for micro-archiving websites.

Note: We do not have the resources to offer technical support or other advice on the use of the tested archiving programme beyond what can be found on this web page.
