Conclusion

The Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2.3 browser can archive up to five levels of a website’s hyperstructure. The web page is archived in the 'Web Archive' format (optional file name extension .waff), which is both a platform-specific (Mac OS X) and programme-specific format.  Web pages are usually archived correctly. It must be seen as a disadvantage that net pages archived with this program can only be inputted into Internet Explorer 5.2.3, and can only be used with Mac OS X. A further complaint is that archiving takes place at a very low speed and occasionally “freezes”, after which the process must be begun again.

Recommended settings

The web page to be archived is inputted into Microsoft Internet Explorer, 'Save as...' is chosen from the 'File' menu, and a file name entered. The 'Web Archive' format is chosen. It is possible to define the types of elements to be included in the archiving (images, sound, recordings, links), as well as the number of levels of the hyperstructure to be saved (max. five).

Back to main outline

The test was carried out by graduate student Bo Hovgaard Thomasen during the period from July- December 2004, and its premises and main results are explicated in the text Test of software and strategies for micro-archiving websites.

Note: We do not have the resources to offer technical support or other advice on the use of the tested archiving programme beyond what can be found on this web page.
