The Centre for Internet Studies contributes to the ongoing theorizing of the internet. The internet is enhancing its flexibility and mobility. For instance, we increasingly meet the internet on mobile platforms such as smart phones and tablets, pushing location-based communication to the centre of internet use. Cloud computing is becoming increasingly popular for performing the most mundane computer-based tasks (e.g. text editing). Internet-based services are seamlessly and automatically integrated online. ‘The internet of things’ highlights the embodiment of the internet. In our work, we discuss the implications of these developments of the internet for the concept of the internet as a ‘medium’. We further explore how they push the boundaries of internet research in the humanities and social sciences.
